The Beginner’s Guide To Healing Crystals

By Rebecca Vogul

In trying times — aka every day of 2020 thus far — turning to time-honored remedies feels natural. After all, uncertain futures call for ancient solutions. This might explain the major resurgence of “crystal culture” in the past few years. Along with tarot, astrology, and meditation, crystals are having a moment amongst wellness-seeking millenials who aren’t afraid to get a little new age-y.

And for good reason! Since the dawn of humankind, our ancestors have instinctively sought out these naturally-occurring minerals for healing, prayer, power, and protection. Medieval poets used crystals to better understand love and desire. Ancient Greeks and Romans suited up with crystals for protection in battle. Crystals have long played a role in traditional Chinese medicine, and even pop up in religious texts from the earliest days of Christianity. They might be particularly trendy now, but they’ve clearly got staying power.

So, if you too are interested in starting up a crystal practice, consider this your official beginner’s guide to six of the most universally beloved minerals. You don’t need to invest all at once and you certainly don’t need to buy the biggest, shiniest, and priciest offerings out there (unless you’re Spencer Pratt...in which case do you, King). Instead, pay attention to the properties that resonate the most with you (it’s about energy, after all) and slowly build a collection that feels intimate and intentional. There’s no right or wrong way to get into crystals — you’ll know it when you feel it.

Rose quartz

Rose Quartz

Referred to as the “Love Stone,” this blush-colored beauty is known for its heart-opening qualities. Whether you’re single or in a relationship, carrying a rose quartz invites love into your life. Think of it like a little neon sign above your head that reads “I’m ready to receive loving energy!

How To Use It

This is an excellent “everyday” crystal. Tuck it into your pocket (preferably a breast pocket) to welcome flirtation and romance in your daily life. If you find yourself stuck in a pattern of negative self-talk, rest rose quartz against your heart until it is warm to the touch. During this process, focus on showering yourself in love and affirmation. Repeat as needed!

Amethyst

Amethyst

Often called the “Manifestation Stone,” amethyst is a powerful aid in clearing away self-doubt and stepping into our full power. Think about all the emotional roadblocks that hold you back from your full potential everyday: nerves, anxiety, moodiness, lethargy. Amethyst’s job is to gently usher these out of your way so you can advance toward your goals unobstructed.

How To Use It

Like all crystals, Amethysts are powered by energy, so try incorporating amethyst into your meditation routine and observe the effect it has on centering and supercharging your practice. Placing an amyshest in your personal space (think: bedroom or living room) is also an expert favorite.

Clear quartz

Clear Quartz

Many call this accessible, much-beloved crystal the “Master Healer.” Clear quartz is an excellent buy for absolute beginners, as it promotes general peace, level-headedness, and clarity (when do we not need a little extra help in these departments?) It also pairs well with other crystals. Think of it as a welcoming base for your glowing, growing collection.

How To Use It

Use this as your starter crystal and test out what feels best to you. Try carrying a small piece in your pocket for a week. Use is as a focal point during meditation. Some experts even suggest turning to it when you feel run down or have a headache coming on. Because clear quartz has such broad, universal benefits, it’s a great companion to experiment with.

Citrine

Citrine

Anyone who’s ever suffered from Imposter’s Syndrome should grab a piece of this cheerful, sunshine-colored crystal immediately. Vibrant citrine is said to help its owners ward off haters and let go of any insults or negativity they’ve been carrying around. We always remember the criticism instead of the compliments; citrine helps us bounce back and keep growing.

How To Use It

The next time you find yourself heading into a stressful situation (think: job interviews, public speaking engagement, first date, or just, you know, life) keep citrine on hand. Think of it as a pep talk in crystal form.

Jade

Jade

Jade earns a spot on the list thanks to its cult status in the beauty world right now. Thanks to jade-rolling and Gua Sha, you just might already have some on hand. Jade-rolling as a skincare staple reportedly dates back to the early 17th century, when the Chinese elites of the Qing dynasty used it to “heal and soothe” themselves. Indeed, jade is said to have detoxifying properties, and is even touted as a way to promote healthy blood circulation.

How To Use It

Join the beauty gurus (and the Chinese nobility before them) and jade roll away! Or, if you’re into a slightly more passive approach, carry it as an auspicious talisman to bring a healthy dose of luck into your life. A piece of jade as a necklace or bracelet is especially powerful, as its contact with your skin serves as a subtle reminder of its mighty presence.

Aquamarine

Aquamarine

Aquamarine is nature’s gift to shy folks. Like the other crystals on this list, it can help us combat anxiety and negativity and give us that ease of spirit needed to feel like ourselves when we’re out in the world...instead of like a ball of socially anxious stress. Experts specifically call out its relationship to the throat chakra, which controls expression and communication.

How To Use It

Grab your aquamarine and find a private place to hash out whatever’s on your mind. Write it out or go ahead and have a full blown conversation with yourself until you’ve made progress in untangling whatever is bothering you. If you’re looking to overcome communication blocks in your relationships, take these learnings (and your aquamarine) and have the tough conversations you’ve been putting off. Your self-work — and your aquamarine companion — will bolster you.

Now that you’ve graduated from your first crystal masterclass, get out there and put your newfound skills to use. Touch your crystals. Meditate with them. Cradle them…even if it makes you feel a little bit silly. Between uses, give your crystals a little recharge by letting them bathe in moonlight or under a thin layer of soil (yes, a potted plant is fine). Give them a dip in cool running water, or (whenever possible) soak them in fresh rainwater. And finally (if you can stand the “woo woo”-ness of it all) don’t forget to thank your crystals — they’re quietly, assuredly working hard for you!
